[A Two-Step Method for Paraphrasing Complex Ideas]에 대해 말씀드리겠습니다.

A Two-Step Method for Paraphrasing Complex Ideas

Step 1: Identify Agents and Actions

Paraphrasing in chunks, or groups of words, is easier and quicker than trying to paraphrase each word individually. You can start chunking information by breaking a sentence into two parts, the agent(s) and the action(s). The agent is the person, idea, event, or institution essential to the activity or condition mentioned. The action is the activity performed or the condition described.

Step 2: Add Key Details

If your paraphrase of just the agents and actions doesn't quite sum up the paragraph (and it often won't), you have probably left out a key detail that identifies any one of these sentence elements: (1) location of the action, (2) background or qualifications of the actor, (3) reason or motivation for the action, (4) time or consequences of the action.

Here is a surprise for you: Being happy means that you realize that there are times that you will be unhappy and recognize that life sometimes stinks. What is uplifting in those times is appreciating life and facing the challenges that come with it, realizing that you are facing challenges fellow humans have also faced. We are not saying you should lower your expectations for your so-called perfect life or downsize your goals; we just believe that if you can align your expectations with reality a little more by expecting to face challenges, you will be better off in the end. There is an interesting biological reinforcement for this notion, too: Your levels of C-reactive protein (a marker of damaging inflammation) have been shown to be higher when you have expectations that are unattainable.

Agent: Being happy => What is uplifting => a perfect life => better off

Action: realize that there are times that you will be unhappy

=> recognize that life sometimes stinks

=> appreciating life and facing challenges

=> expecting to facing the challenges

Key Detail: (조건) if you can align your expectations with reality a little more

It is a fundamental mistake to imagine that when we see the non-value in a value or the untruth in a truth, the value or the truth ceases to exist. It has only become relative. Everything human is relative, because everything rests on an inner polarity; for everything is a phenomenon of energy. Energy necessarily depends on a pre-existing polarity, without which there could be no energy. There must always be high and low, hot and cold, etc. so that the equilibrating process ― which is energy ― can take place. Therefore the tendency to deny all previous values in favor of their opposites is just . And in so far as it is a question of rejecting universally accepted and indubitable values, the result is a fatal loss.

① another way of pursuing relativeness in human affairs

② as desirable as the tendency to accept all those values

③ as much of an exaggeration as the earlier onesidedness

④ the one and only way of approaching the ultimate truth

⑤ to admit the presence of energy derived from an inner polarity

Agent:

(근거문장) to imagine that when we see the non-value in a value or the untruth in a truth, the value or the truth ceases to exist.

(빈킨문장) the tendency to deny all previous values in favor of their opposites (기존의 가치를 부인하고 그와 정 반대되는 것들만을 옹호하는 성향)

Action(필자의 agent에 대한 의견):

(근거문장) is a fundamental mistake(근본적인 실수/착각)=> negative connotation

(빈칸문장) _________________.
